Michigan Survivors Deserve Their Day in Court

Survivors of childhood sexual abuse often need decades to come forward. Michigan's current deadlines shut the courthouse door before many of them are ready.

House Bill 6047 would change that.

What does HB 6047 do?

  1. Gives survivors of childhood sexual abuse until age 42 to file a civil lawsuit, up from age 28 today.

  2. Gives survivors seven years, up from three, to file after they realize the abuse caused their injuries.

  3. Removes the deadline entirely when the abuser has been convicted of criminal sexual conduct.

  4. Opens a one-year window for survivors whose claims already expired to finally seek justice.
